The first four digit of the long number signifies the
system (such as 4 for Visa and 5 for Master card). The next three, four or five
digits represent the issuing bank and the rest are our unique card numbers.
One of the
reasons why first four digits are visible and rest all the numbers is invisible
on most of the bills.
